12. Gary Danko

This elegant restaurant's designer pays tribute to its past while imagining its future. A 21st-century take on an old hotel. The Stanford Court Hotel, which opened in 1915, was the Bay Area’s first luxury hotel. This 2019 renovation weaves together the hotel’s historic bones with modern design and furnishings. 

Hotel designer Gary Danko (Domenico Danovato) forked out over $2.5 million to recreate the original Stanford Court’s lobby ceiling, which features a hand-painted mural of peacocks and roses.
