6. Mission Rock Resort

A tableau of locally-sourced ingredients, Mission Rock's menu has plenty of options if you want to dine outside, with San Franciscans (and tourists) flocking year-round to enjoy the view.

Located on the Marin Headlands, this 14-acre property boasts sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay. Just 7,000 miles from San Francisco, Mission Rock is as far east as you can get.

Its owners, who also own the iconic Cliff House hotel in San Francisco, spent six years restoring and reimagining it. The result is Mission Rock Resort, which offers 31 guest rooms, a 13,000-square-foot spa, restaurants, and event space.

The food and beverages served here are sourced from local purveyors and feature ingredients like sustainable oysters and Dungeness crab. There's also a 13,000-square-foot spa. Many people flock here to dine outside.

7. Park Chalet

Park Chalet, in San Francisco's Potrero Hill, has some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge and is the best restaurant with outdoor seating.

Think San Francisco is too dangerous to eat outdoors?

At Park Chalet, a San Francisco institution, servers deliver wine and cheese to diners perched on benches in the 32-degree Sierra sun. Or, for a bit of cozy seclusion, diners can head indoors, where fireside tables and chandeliers give off a romantic glow.

Park Chalet, which opened in 1939, is widely considered one of the city's best restaurants. So, when diners want outdoor views, Park Chalet is where they head.

But San Francisco famously has a problem with air quality. Just last week, the city’s Department of Public Works decided to stop clearing away trees and vegetation from city streets—a decision that went into effect on March 1.

This central San Francisco garden courtyard has tables, lounge chairs, and 360-degree views.

Inside, rows of palm trees — as well as cactus, bromeliads, and orchids — can be seen from all sides of this 21-story glass building, while guests enjoy al fresco dining in the shade. A very popular destination, the Palm House serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The name Palm House comes from the ancient Chinese practice of growing plants in domed structures called paling. Originally, these structures were built for horticulture, not recreation, but in the 19th century, the Palm House was established at greenhouses and gardens all over the world.

San Francisco’s Mission District has a flavor all its own. It’s home to the largest concentration of Latino residents outside Mexico. It’s also home to hundreds of restaurants.

But Starbelly—a stylish, bustling, Italian brasserie with an expansive, outdoor dining area—is by far the neighborhood’s best.

The restaurant has nine chefs, each one devoted to a different pasta dish, and a menu that changes daily. Starbelly serves food that is simple and delicious, the sort that locals crave.

An elegant eatery with a cozy, wood-paneled interior. Oozing bistro-style charm, Zazie serves classic French fare with contemporary flair.

“Every time I come here, I somehow end up sitting in the same seat, I end up sitting next to the same people,” says San Francisco resident Trish Mullan, who eats at Zazie every couple of weeks.

The bistro-style eatery with a bustling bar offers classic French fare with a twist. The dishes are imaginative and a little unexpected, like the shoulder of lamb, served with local goat cheese, beets, and carrot jus; or a seared salmon fillet with carrots, potatoes, and green beans.

The food, however, is the main attraction.

When chef-owner Ross Tocchini opened Scopo Divino in 2008, he used only locally sourced ingredients, but slowly refined his seasonal menu, now offering dishes such as roasted chicken with cauliflower and beets, or spaghetti with Parmigiano-Reggiano, a crispy duck confit, and grilled radicchio. The restaurant received a Michelin star in 2012, and Tocchini just returned the honor.

13. Wayfare Tavern

This narrow, wood-paneled, roadside eatery is the perfect place for a breezy lunch. Serving classic American cuisine, this outdoor restaurant in the Mission District is so popular that the wait sometimes stretches to an hour and a half.

Wayfare Tavern, named for the Camino de Santiago, is in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District. Its local clientele, mostly the tattooed and bearded, flock here to eat, drink, and watch the game.

Its outdoor patio offers the best of both worlds. A narrow entrance and a common table line the walkway. Inside, customers line up to order at the bar, then take a seat at communal tables.

14. Catch

The catch just might be the open air, where you can watch the locals shuffle by. The catch is a seafood restaurant in San Francisco. It’s just a few blocks from Union Square, the hustle and bustle of the city. But that doesn’t mean that the dining here feels cramped or chaotic.

The restaurant’s open kitchen is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s also a two-level patio with outdoor seating. The balcony has a view of the city, but you’re still far from the hubbub.

The Fish

Catch serves a variety of fish, from scallops to oysters, as well as seafood dishes like shrimp ceviche and grilled octopus.

The Atmosphere

The restaurant’s interior is bright and airy. There’s wood paneling, lots of natural light, and a modern take on traditional decor.

It’s summer in California, but the restaurant does great with winter dishes. The grilled octopus with ricotta and basil isn’t heavy, but it fills you up.

15. a Mano

The website and app "a Mano" is San Francisco's best restaurant website for out-and-out Italian dining. “They focus on food and wine that speaks of the land,” says proprietor Matthieu Galli. “They take a lot of pride in our wines and we love great food. And we’re passionate about our neighborhood.”

Touring the Mission’s buzzing restaurant scene, Galli and his business partners came upon a tiny storefront that held the only table on the street. “It was literally like, ‘Let’s get out of here,’” says Galli. But instead of leaving, Galli decided to plant roots.

So in 2014, he and his partner, Danielle, converted the space into a restaurant. It’s now called “a Mano,” which means “a hand” in Italian—a nod to the hospitality that pulls people to the table and back again.
