“A Magnificent Life” was an eye-opener. Not Chinese TV. The documentary was by a Chinese filmmaker, Thuy Linh. It was about the life of, of all people, the late (and since-deceased) Chinese painter Ma Desheng. While the film is definitely about that artist, it is also a very revealing look at late 20th-century China and the lives lived in the midst of all the perils and possibilities that hyphenate that country.

The diners at Da Hong Pao Restaurant and Bar on 14th Street NW, in Washington DC, were the ones making the documentary. The patrons willingly gave Linh access to their private lives, past, and present, and even to their homes and lives.

It is Vietnamese, not Chinese. But it shares the same proprietor, Nguyen Nhu Le, who opened Da Hong Pao 11 years ago.

In summary, Da Hong Pao Restaurant and Bar is a nice Chinese restaurant on 14th Street Northwest Washington DC. The restaurant is spacious, with dim lighting that makes you feel more relaxed while enjoying the delicious food.
